Trevor Hall - Something for You
This guy is blowing my mind. Discovered him randomly, appropriately timed as I’ve been getting back in touch with my “hippie” side (using the term neither in a way that’s demeaning nor too serious).
Without knowing the details, Trevor seems to imbue his songs with themes from his incarnation of the “hippie” community - love, unity, Krishna Dass philosophy and probably more Hindi/Buddhism and less Rasta. What I love about his work is that he manages to incorporate all these themes passionately, but with tact (often songs in this community lack some self-awareness and come off corny), and in a way that is still appealing to more than just his content niche.
The music is beautiful - it’s well produced but still charmingly intimate and honest. It incorporates chanting occasionally without being all chanting, and it’s nothing like raggae which seems to be the standard go-to for similar communities and while delightful, tends to lack in originality.
I love that Trevor manages to have a foot in both worlds - his heart is in a unique place but he doesn’t come off as completely gone. It’s a really amazing balance and definitely one I’d like to work on in my own music. I think it’s possible to reach more people that way.
