Watching Invisible Daughter… Vocalist totally reminds me of Poe. Which is a great association.
Emo isn’t a genre - it’s far too messy and contentious for that. What the term does signify is a particular relationship between a fan and a band. It’s the desire to turn a monologue into a dialogue, to be part if the art that affects you and to connect to it on every possible level - sentiments particularly relevant in an increasingly corporate, suburban, and diffuse culture such as ours.
Lul, already glad I bought this book.
Another stunning tour poster for John Brown’s Body.

The Careless Lovers - Black Coffee
Just discovered an office mate of mine is the bassist in this band. I love this stuff and don’t get hardly enough of it in my life. I always thought if I couldn’t be a singer, I’d want to be a dancer - hella lindy hop style.
How about this KICK ASS newretro tour poster from Red Fang?
Win.
This was a good, quick read.
Pretty cool Moog synthesizer (synthesizer synthesizer?) on Google right now.
Reminds me of my dad.
Damn the Man! Save the Empire! Let’s do this…
Still amazed with Daryl Palumbo’s vocals. Can I call it the dirty fop? #GlassJaw #HeadAutomatica
The Red Death, friends of ours, and a now defunkt band. So sad they only made one album. #deathmetal
My Chemical Romance - The Kids From Yesterday
Over 10 years. This video tells the story of some awkward kids who started a band because of 9/11, struggled with instant fame, substance abuse and depression, and eventually came out the other side in a world full of color (and you know… laser guns).
In a lot of ways, I grew with this band. The Black Parade hit at the same time as my own epic struggle with depression and anxiety. Seeing them find their way out of that black and white world has been a huge inspiration for me.
As Scroobius Pip might say, “My Chemical Romance is just a band”. It’s more than true.
And that’s exactly why they’re so important to me - they’re the first band I ever truly realized was just a few regular guys (albeit with some great talent).
Along with a few other influences, their existence and honesty helped me recognize the validity in my lifelong dream of being a singer, and proved to me that you don’t have to be born some kind of special person to do it. That you don’t have to be cool.
Amusing side note: Some real classic clips in that video, including the time Frank accidentally kicked Gerard in the nuts on stage.
Pile of new, mostly surprisingly cheap, music-related books! Some just for funsies.
