This was a good, quick read.
Practice, practice, practice. And then go see a band that inspires the crap out of you.
Trying to get the juices flowing. I have no idea what this is.
Babbling at Bimbo’s Cantina.
Kit teaching me things. He has a way of opening my mind and making me feel comfortable being an amateur - nothing is uncool, everything is worth trying.
At the same time, he has high expectations and encourages all the “hard and boring” classic stuff - learning to read music and practicing scales.
Everything he’s taught me has helped immensely. I’m gonna look like a creeper for catching this one without him knowing, haha. But that’s how I do - I think my friends are used to it.
Just finished a new song called “Spandex”! It’s high on the self-indulgence meter, but I also feel like I have to just get it out and let it do its thing.
They say you should be yourself as a songwriter and performer, and be extremely yourself - I guess I’ll have to hope that tact comes with time.

As per my question, “Do you have to be well loved to make a slow song worth listening to”….
Setting aside the fact that this is Dustin Kensrue of Thrice and his vocal texture and control is freaking inhuman…. I dunno, this seems entertaining enough to listen to, don’t you think?
Thrice - Beggars
Do you have to be well-loved to make a slow song worth listening to?
Picking cover songs for open mic, I find myself veering far from slow/soft songs which can really lose the audience unless you’re rocking the shit out of it or unless you already have the audience captive.
It has me wondering about writing my own songs. Is it worth writing slow songs?
Working on my electric bo staff skillz. Trying to hear what goes into a chord and write accordingly, without being intentional about the chord.
Today: Vocal exercises to work on “mix” voice (scales, intervals, soft palette). Practicing covers for open mic.
Reading “33 Revolutions” by Guardian author Dorian Lynskey. Great so far.
Working on both today. Really want to expand into electric finally.
Still trying to get some of the basics to stick.
